One of my favorite ways to declutter my mind is to brain dump. This is so easy, and it works for me every time. Just take out a piece of paper and write down everything you are thinking about in no particular order. It doesn’t even matter if it makes sense. The object of the game is to get all of that junk out of your head and onto paper. This is an amazing hack to fall asleep faster when you do it before bed. You can even do it during the day to relive stress.

You can also use a journal to brain dump so that you can go back to it later just in case you had a brainstorm idea while you were brain dumping. That is always a good thing.

If you are like I used to be, your to do list is a mile long and if you are honest with yourself, the list is just totally unrealistic for any human being to tackle. Simplify your life by resetting your routine to a max of the 3 most important items per day on your list. By limiting that list, you can concentrate on those important things without worrying about all of the other things that need to be done. I use these note pads from dollar tree for my To Do List.

I have another list that I make when I brain dump that has all of the other things that I would like to get done. I pull from that list in order of importance if I get finished with my first 3 items. This system has helped my stress levels by setting realistic goals for myself that I can actually accomplish.

They say that the negative impact of rumination will strengthen over time if you keep doing it.

Another study in this article suggests that a way to make your negative thoughts go away is by accepting that those thoughts are going to come and go in your mind so try to recognize them without reacting. It also suggests that present mindfulness can helpful because when you’re thinking about the present, you are not thinking about the past.

Meditation is cheap, easy, and doesn’t require any special equipment. You can practice meditation anywhere.

There are several different types of meditation that can help you focus your mind in different ways. You can focus your attention on a specific object, a mantra, your breath, or an image in your mind.

Here are just a few types of meditation.

  • Guided Meditation– Focus your mental image on people, places, or things that you find relaxing while trying to use as many senses as you can. You might be led by a guide or teacher.
  • Mantra Meditation– You repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to yourself to clear your mind.
  • Mindfulness meditation– Focuses on being in the present moment. An example would be to focus you mind on your breath to clear your mind. You may notice your thoughts and emotions, but you are supposed to let them go without judgement according to Mayo Clinic.
  • Qi gong-This involves a combination of meditation, physical movement, breathing exercise, and relaxation to bring back and keep balance.
  • Tai chi– This is a gentle Chinese martial arts training that involves self-paced moves while you practice deep breathing.
  • Transcendental Meditation– This is similar to Mantra Meditation in that you silently repeat a mantra that you choose in a specific way to clear your mind without effort or concentration.
  • Yoga– This focuses on different positions and controlled breathing exercises to help you to have a more flexible body and a calm mind.
