Achieving Debt Freedom: In Debt and Divorced

Achieving Debt Freedom

Are you interested in achieving debt freedom? Are you drowning in debt? I am living proof that debt freedom is possible by taking baby steps starting right where you are. After years and years of robbing Peter to pay Paul, living paycheck to paycheck, and getting loans from the cash advance places every week because I could never afford to pay them off, my world changed overnight.

One day I was married, the next day I was getting a divorce. I was left with no money, but I had a job. Our bank account was overdrawn, I discovered that we owed money to the IRS from my ex’s business when I tried to file my taxes on my own, and I had just enough money to pay our mortgage at the end of the month without anything else. I was not eligible for food assistance. I had three kids that depended on me, so I had to do something. My life was turned upside down and then right side up.

Achieving Debt Freedom: Paying Off the House

Achieving debt freedom and paying off the house.

After all of the other bills were paid off, I wasn’t satisfied yet. I had one thing left to pay off and it was one of the most important things to me. My House. During my first marriage, I had my first house taken away in bankruptcy. That time in my life was heart breaking. I was determined that no one would ever take my home from me again. So, with that same determination, I made a plan.

I went online and found a loan payment calculator with an amortization schedule. I plugged in my numbers, and I had goal as to when my house would be paid off. It wasn’t an exact science, but it was close enough. I transferred those numbers to a spread sheet that I kept with me all of the time so I could look at it. When I would pay more that I had planned on the principle, I adjusted the numbers. Week after week, month after month, I could see the principle getting smaller and smaller. Finally, the balance was small enough for me to pay in one chunk.
